German Court Approves Extradition Of Iranian Diplomat Suspected In Bomb Plot

A German court has approved the extradition of an Iranian diplomat to Belgium on a European arrest warrant for allegedly being part of a failed plot to bomb an Iranian opposition rally near Paris.

The Superior Regional Court in the Bavarian city of Bamberg said in a statement on October 1 that it approved the extradition of the Iranian diplomat based in Vienna, who has been named as Assadollah Assadi.

“The suspect cannot cite diplomatic immunity because he was on a several-day holiday trip outside of his host state, Austria, and not traveling between his host country and the state that dispatched him,” the court said, adding the extradition ruling was made on September 27.

Assadi was taken into custody in July near the German city of Aschaffenburg on the warrant, which named his as a suspect in the plot to bomb the June 30 rally.

His arrest followed the apprehension of a couple of Iranian descent after Belgian police reportedly found powerful explosives in their car.
