The Iranian
When I left a message on Taraneh Hemami's answering machine in San Francisco,
I knew little about her
or her
work . But I had met so many other great
Iranian artists since I moved to northern California that I thought there was
a good chance I would like
her work. I was right. I loved them
.
At her suggestion, we met at the Brainwash cafe near downtown San Francisco,
and later went to a computer center to scan and take a look at her slides
. It did
not take long to realize her great talent
-- and my
luck.
Hemami, a Tehrani who got her masters in fine arts
from
the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1991, has been
a prominant
and active
member of the San Francisco art scene
.
Her work
was featured
on the cover of Art Week magazine in 1994 and she has had numerous exhibitions
(paintings
and installations) in recent years, including at the LAB
, San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art Rental Gallery and the J. Paul Getty Trust gallery in Los Angeles
.
She will set up an installation at the Contemporary
Arts Collective, Four Walls,
curated by Donna Schumacher, in Las Vegas next year. Don't miss it
.
