Arlene Dallalfar and Fereydoun Safizadeh arrived at the Shahsavan winter
camps in the Moghan Steppe of Northwestern Iran in mid-April 1978 and spent
two weeks observing the daily life in the winter camps. They prepared to
undertake
the elaborate spring migration that begins approximately 45 days after
Norooz, the Iranian new year, and the spring equinox. "The main objective
for the project was the visual preservation of fragments of nomadic lifestyle
in Iran... I was also interested in the effects of rapid socio-economic
change on the migratory patterns and practices of the Shahsavan," says
Safizadeh [Read: "Yeyloq,
