It was sweet
Last Sunday (February 6) I had the opportunity to see the final match
of the wrestling
wolrd cup 2000 competition held at the Patriot Center in the campus
of George Mason University in FairFax,Virginia.
I must confess that I have never seen any wrestling matches in person.
But as a child in Iran , I saw many great wrestling matches on TV and flet
the excitement and the sheer tension between the Iranian, Russian and American
wrestlers.
I was very happy to see national team of Iran compete for the title
of the world champions in this year's event. The Iranian team included
young and technically skilled wrestlers.
My deep appreciation goes to the enthusiasm of the Iranian crowd who
cheered our national wrestling team and to the way our team performed in
this international event which also included the teams of the USA,Ukraine,Cuba
and Russia.
Iran received three gold medals and one silver medal and got the team
silver medal for the overall event.
As the three member of the Iranian team climbed the podium to receive
their gold medal, the Iranian crowd cheered and expressed their pride.
It was a moment in which our people felt pride and joy in seeing a traditional
sport of our homeland recognized as one of the best in the world.
For us outside of Iran it was sweet. I am proud of our national wrestling
team and feel joy in belonging to a community of Iranians who cherish
this ancient sport which continues to bring pride and success to our country.
