MAKHMALBAF: An Iranian Filmmaking Family
An Iranian filmmaking dynasty-in-the-making where life and art intersect
and imitate one another: the work of Mohsen Makhmalbaf and daughter Samira
Makhmalbaf reflects the struggle to balance modernity and tradition in
Iran.
Three films by Mohsen Makhmalbaf:
· A Moment of Innocence (1996, 78 mins, color) In this
film within a film, Mohsen appears as himself in the role of director making
a film about a climactic moment in his own life. Showtimes: Fri (12/10)

Dec. 12: Bahman Maghsoudlou, Iranian film critic and producer. Also a personal
friend and collaborator of Mohsen Makhmalbaf. **
· The Silence (Iran/France, 1998, 77 mins, color) A poetic
tale about a blind ten-year-old boy who works as an instrument tuner. Showtimes:

· The Apple (1998, 85 mins, color) The true story of twin
girls and how they win their freedom from being locked away in their own
home. Winner 1998 Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard Award and was
shown at the 1999 New York Film Festival.
