Release sought for jailed Tehran mayor's farewell
TEHRAN, June 6 (Reuters) - Tehran city council has asked the judiciary
to let reformer Gholamhossein Karbaschi out of prison to attend the inauguration
of his successor as mayor, a member of the council said on Sunday.
A shrewd administrator credited with rebuilding the capital wrecked
by war and neglect, Karbaschi was jailed last month on a graft conviction
in a case which pitted allies of President Mohammad Khatami against the
conservative-led judiciary.
The new mayor, Morteza Alviri, another liberal reformer, was chosen
last week by the new council elected in February.
Council member Ebrahim Asgharzadeh told the official IRNA news agency
the council's 15 members had made an ``informal'' request to the judiciary
to let Karbaschi say his farewell and introduce his successor at a ceremony
on Tuesday.
