Iran hosts nearly 2 million refugees
TEHRAN (May 25) XINHUA - Iran presently hosts 1.9 million refugees,
the largest number in any country of the world, a senior Iranian official
said on Tuesday.
Hassanali Ibrahimi, advisor to the Interior Minister and director general
for foreign nationals and immigrants affairs, disclosed this at the second
international conference of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) opened
here Tuesday.
Ibrahimi said the number included 1.4 million Afghan refugees, 530,000
Iraqis and 32,000 refugees of other nationalities, the Islamic Republic
News Agency reported.
He said that 5 percent, or 85,000 people, of the refugees are settled
in guest houses and receive international aid, and the rest are scattered
in different towns and villages throughout Iran.
