New York seminar on Iran elections
On Wednesday, March 8, Gulf/2000 in cooperation with the Columbia University
Seminar on the Middle East will host a special seminar on the recent elections
in Iran.
For this event we are pleased to have four exceptionally astute observers
of Iranian politics:
o Dr. Mohammad Hadi Semati is Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law and
Political Science and Associate Dean for Research at the University of
Tehran.
o Dr. Nasser Hadian is Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law and Political
Science, and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Tehran.
o Siamak Namazi is Director of Business Consulting at the Atieh Bahar
consultancy in Tehran; he is editor of Iran Focus, and Managing Editor
of Iran Quarterly Report (published by US-based Future Alliances International)
which specialize in political and economic analysis of Iran.
o Eric Rouleau is a former ambassador of France to Tunisia and Turkey;
he was chief Middle East correspondent for Le Monde, where his coverage
of the Iranian revolution was unparalleled. He has recently revisited Iran
and is in the United States on a speaking tour focusing on the Iranian
elections. He will serve as discussant.
All four are members of Gulf/2000 who are frequently quoted by the Western
media covering Iran, and whose names appear in political reporting and
books from the region. The Iranian participants will be coming directly
from Tehran, where they will have observed and participated in the elections.
The Seminar will meet in room 1512, on the 15th floor of the School
of International and Public Affairs, at the corner of Amsterdam Avenue
and 118th Street in New York City. We will assemble at 4:30 p.m. on March
8 for tea. The discussion will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will continue through
drinks, dinner and post-dinner discussion until no later than 9:00 p.m.
There is a charge of $35 per person to cover the cost of the room and dinner.
All members of Gulf/2000 are welcome to attend if you are in the New
York area on that date. You may also invite friends or spouses. However,
we have limits on the number of people who can be accommodated, so we must
insist that you let us know by the end of the day on Thursday, March 2
if you wish to attend.
We would appreciate it if you would send the $35 fee in advance. You
can make your check payable to Columbia University and mail it to:

you need parking space, please let him know the color and make of your

We hope that many members of Gulf/2000 will find it possible to join
