Iran: vigil in Washington DC
Press Release
Alliance for Defense of Human Rights in Iran
June 19, 2000
Saturday, July 8th 2000 marks the first anniversary of the student movement
in Iran.
On this day, a peaceful rally by the students of Tehran University and
several other cities demanding press freedom and human rights turned into
one of the ugliest chapter in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran,
when revolutionary guards along with Ansar-e Hizbullah vigilantes attacked
the student dorms, beating the students and throwing them out of the windows.
As many as five were killed and over a thousand arrested. Still one
year later, hundreds remain in jail and their future uncertain.
To commemorate this day and to voice our support for the students, the
Alliance for Defense of Human Rights in Iran will stage a silent vigil
in front of the Interest Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Date: Friday July 7, 2000
Time: 9 PM
Location: Interest Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran, 2209
Wisconsin Avenue, NW,Washington, DC
