Khatami stresses right to use nuclear technology
Ocotber 18, Teheran (dpa) - President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday
stressed Iran 's right to make use of nuclear technology, the news network
Khabar reported.
Iran has the right to make use of nuclear technology while respecting
international norms, Khatami told visiting Secretary of Russia's National
Security Council Sergei Ivanov.
He added that Iran 's nuclear cooperation with Russia is peaceful and
acknowledged by relevant international organizations. Iran is cooperating
with Russia on an 800-million-dollar nuclear power plant in the southern
Persian Gulf port of Bushehr.
The first unit of the 1,000-megawatt light-water reactor is scheduled
to be completed in May 2003.
Teheran has constantly denied accusations by Washington that it is
involved in the production of weapons of mass destruction and always reiterates
that nuclear projects conducted in Iran in cooperation with Russia and
China are all for peaceful purposes and under the auspices of the International
Atomic Energy Agency.
Khatami is invited by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to make
a state-visit to Moscow but the date has not been fixed yet.
