I picked up my daughter Mahdiyeh from school earlier than usual. We
had an appointment at the Immigration and Naturalization Service office
near Washington. Got a letter yesterday that her application for a temporary
work permit had been approved. I've had major hassles getting an American
passport for her (and still haven't been able to get her one). So, I wasn't
sure what to expect. We were in the INS office no more than 15 minutes.
Seeing Mahdiyeh's "Employment Authorization" card was such a
thrill. She was a step closer to becoming an American. We should have a
nice lunch and celebrate, I thought. "Would you like to have chelokabab
or Chinese?" I asked. "Chinese," she said without hesitation.
PS: Thanks to Fariba
Faiz for her invaluable help.
