Februay 5, 2001, Teheran (dpa) - Iran's army chief of staff was replaced again, the official news agency IRNA reported Monday.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who also acts as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, appointed Monday former ground forces commander, Brigadier General Pourshasb, as the new chief of staff, IRNA said.

The former chief of staff, General Salimi, served for less than nine months, IRNA said. Iran has two major armed forces. One is the regular army and the other the influential paramilitary Revolutionary Guards.

Both of the forces are under the command of Khamenei and their logistics under the supervision of the defence ministry led by Admiral Ali Shamkhani.
