Iran's army chief of staff replaced again
Februay 5, 2001, Teheran (dpa) - Iran's army chief of staff was replaced
again, the official news agency IRNA reported Monday.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who also acts as commander-in-chief
of the armed forces, appointed Monday former ground forces commander, Brigadier
General Pourshasb, as the new chief of staff, IRNA said.
The former chief of staff, General Salimi, served for less than nine
months, IRNA said. Iran has two major armed forces. One is the regular
army and the other the influential paramilitary Revolutionary Guards.
Both of the forces are under the command of Khamenei and their logistics
under the supervision of the defence ministry led by Admiral Ali Shamkhani.
