In memory of gay activist Saviz Shafaii
You are cordially invited by Homan LA, and the Society of Iranian Women
in Los Angeles to an event in memory of Saviz Shafaii on Monday, 22 January
2001. The event will be hosted by Kanoon-e Sokhan, at 7:00 p.m. at the
Community Room of the Santa Monica Mall.
Saviz was an Iranian gay activist and for years advocated for equal
rights for all people. In 1972, he gave the first known public lecture
on homosexuality in Iran at Shiraz University. He continued his activism
through his work with HOMAN-the group to defend the rights of Iranian GLBT,
while writing poetry and prose and working as a social worker, until his
untimely death this past September.
The title of the program at Kanoon-e Sokhan will be "In Memory
of Saviz Shafaii: A look at Homosexuality in Iranian Society." Mrs.
Maheen Shaghaghi, Saviz's mother and an activist in her own right; Hossein
Torkpour, an activist with Iran-Shademan of Montreal; Mehrnoosh Mazareii,
writer; and Dr. Parvaneh Zia, psychologist are scheduled to be on the program.
We think that this will be the first program of its kind to be held
for the Iranian community in Los Angeles. We hope that you will attend
and bring your friends and family to support the program and to help us
celebrate Saviz's life.
Kanoon-e Sokhan's announcement of the event will be posted shortly.
In the meantime, please feel free to contact me or homanla@yahoo.com,
if you have any questions or if you need additional information about the
program.
