April 9, WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Iran beat the United States 17-13
on the strength of Ali Reza Heidari's victory by technical fall at 213
pounds in a freestyle wrestling dual meet at the Dan Gable Classic on Thursday
night.
Heidari, the world champion at 187 pounds last year, scored a 3-point
takedown over Chad Lamer with 2 seconds left in the first 3-minute period
for the 10-0 victory.
The victory gave Iran, the defending freestyle World Champions, an insurmountable
16-10 lead with one match left. I
n the highlight match, Mohammad Talaei of Iran scored a 5-2 victory
over Terry Brands in a battle of world champions at 127 pounds.
Talaei won the world championship in 1997, Brands in 1993 and 1995.
The deciding points of the match came with 35 seconds left in the second
period. Talaei scored a 2-point takedown for a 4-2 lead.
He added an insurance takedown with 11 seconds remaining. Brands had
been away from competition for nearly 14 months to let a hip injury heal
properly
