Iranian-Americans among top donors to Clinton defense fund

THE IRANIAN, August 22, 1998 -- Five Iranian-Americans are among prominent individuals who have donated thousands of dollars to a fund set up to help President Clinton's legal defense in the ongoing investigation against him, according to a report published Saturday.

A list published in the Washington Post includes 62 donors who have given $10,000, inlcuding Hollywood "performers and directors such as Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand, Michael Douglas, Ron Howard, Norman Lear, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw-Spielberg as well as studio executives Jeffrey Katzenberg, David Geffen, Harvey Weinstein and Bud Yorkin."

The Iranian-Americans on the list are:

- Cyrus Ardalan (Banker/Paribas)
- Siamak Bayat-Makou (Graphic Designer)
- Jamshid Gharemani Ghajar (Physician)
- Shahryar Kashanchi (General Manager/MetLife)
- Mehrdad Nemazee (Real Estate/NY Urban Property)

The $10,000 donation is the maximum allowed by law. Clinton's legal bills up to last April was estimated at over six million dollars.

Clinton is being investigated by special prosecutor Kenneth Starr on whether he committed perjury or obstruction of justice in the Paula Jones sexual harassment civil lawsuit.
