News & Views Open Letter by Iranian Writers to the People of Iran Translated by About Iran Dear Compatriots Calamity piles upon calamity, and no one is held accountable. The heart wrenching deaths of writers in the past months are evidence of an unbridled violence which aims to destroy the freedom and security of citizens and to create chaos within the civil society. It has not been long since the terrifying disaster of the murders of Dariush Forouhar and his wife that the body of Mohammad Mokhtari, an intellectual, writer and poet, has been discovered in the state's morgue after his abduction. And now, even as we are coping with [the harsh reality of] having the body of this dear martyr on our hands, we learn that Mohammad Jafar Pooyandeh, the esteemed writer and translator, has disappeared. Lately, we have witnessed suspicious deaths and gruesome murders. It is our belief that this recent wave of violence has been intentionally planned. As we speak out about this organized violence and express our [concern about] the lack of protection for the lives of writers and intellectuals, we ask for an unequivocal explanation by the state authorities; and, we announce that, in the re-occurrence of such events, legal agencies can not disavow their common responsibility for protecting the lives of citizens. We ask all those who can not stand this situation, which is counter to freedom and public security, to [help] end this production of terror.
