U.S. condemns deaths of Iran writers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The United States strongly condemned the killings of three dissident writers in Iran, calling the crimes an attempt to stifle free speech.

``We urge the Iranian leadership to protect the lives of all Iranian citizens, including writers and other voices of dissent, and to preserve the rule of law,'' State Department spokesman James Foley said.

He said the killings ``point to a pattern of violence and intimidation'' against those whose views differ from those of the authorities.

He stopped short of blaming the government for the deaths, saying it is impossible for the United States to verify who is responsible.

In addition to the three dead, an official Iranian daily reported Monday that two other dissidents are missing.

Two of the dead, Mohammad Jafar Pouyandeh and Mohammad Mokhtari, were attempting to establish a writer's association. Another writer, Majid Sharif, was found dead after disappearing from home.
