Authorities are hoping the express train, part of a still uncompleted
metro service for the capital begun before the 1979 Islamic revolution,
will one day carry some 100 million passengers annually.
A delegation of top officials, including Interior Minister Abdol-Vahed
Mussavi-Lari, accompanied Khatami on the 30 kilometer (18 mile) journey
from Karaj to the capital.
The trains were purchased from China for some 550 million dollars.
