Iranian climbers reach top of Mount Everest
TEHRAN, May 20 (AFP) - A team of Iranian mountain climbers reached the summit of Mount Everest and unfurled the Iranian flag there on Wednesday, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported.
The 17-strong team reached the summit of the world's tallest peak at 0730 GMT, the agency said.
The successful climb makes Iran the 24th country to send a team to the "top of the world" at 8,848 meters (29,028 feet), IRNA said.
Iran, a country of high plateaus and mountains, has a long tradition of mountain climbing. Its highest peak, Mount Damavand, is 6,768 meters (22,205 feet) high and just some 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of Tehran.
