People's Mojahedin doesn't deserve `terrorist' label

I enjoyed your April 22 article "Controversy dogs People's Mojahedin." It has been said that if you really want to know what somebody believes, look carefully at what he's willing to fight and die for. If this bears any truth, let us apply it to the People's Mojahedin.
For the past 19 years, this organization has been fighting against one of mankind's most tyrannical regimes - a regime that at the threshold of the 21st century and in the reign of its so-called moderate president has doubled its 1977 number of executions, stoned women and men for simple love affairs and spread terror abroad.
By no means am I implying that the Mojahedin is without flaws, but in general, it has striven for democracy. It has lobbied ceaselessly in the West for the past 20 years and built a grass-roots support system in Iran. More than 100,000 martyrs have died in its cause, and it boasts an impressive volunteer army of 30,000 to 50,000.
Concerning the State Department's accusation that it is a "terrorist" organization, the Mojahedin has adequately responded in the recent book, "Legacy of a Misguided Policy." Furthermore, the Mojahedin surely could not have received the support of more than 200 U.S. congressmen without merit.
In short, the Mojahedin is the best alternative to the mullahs' regime. In the real world, its dedication, sacrifice, selflessness and hard work will impel us to ignore the few weaknesses of the its past.
