SUPPORT IHRWG'S CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY IN IRAN
October 13, 1997
The Iranian Human Rights Working Group (IHRWG) is inviting you to support the campaign to abolish the death penalty in Iran by signing the petition, "I support the campaign for abolition of Death Penalty in Iran!" at our web site: //www.ihrwg.org/CP/ (List of signatures)
You can view the documents on the subject of the death penalty and add your name to the list of those who have already declared their support for the campaign. Among the early signatories supporting the campaign are a number of close relatives of the victims of the waves of executions in Iran (including Haj Khalil Reza'i, father of the famous Reza'i family) who have by implication expressed their desire NOT to seek revenge or see their killers punished in their name. We are also asking you to help our campaign by passing the word and actively collecting signatures from fellow Iranians; for those with no access to the Internet, paper copies of the support forms can be produced and circulated to fill in and sign.
We would like to inform the Iranian public that we are actively working on drawing the attention and support of all Iranian political groups for abolition of the death penalty. We have written letters to the leaders of Iranian political groups, both inside and outside the country, and urged them to help Iran put a stop to this inhumane form of punishment, and join the growing number of UN member countries (now a majority) who have stopped the use of judicial execution altogether. Quoting the fact that on the world scale "our country has had one of the highest number of executions in the last two decades", it is pointed out to the recipients of these letters that campaigning against these brutalities cannot be viewed with "utmost sincerity" if the campaigners themselves are not "committed to the abolition of the death penalty altogether!" The letters continue with asking the respondents for their support and expressing the hope that the name of their organisation can be included in the list of supporters to be issued by IHRWG at the anniversary of the call.
We ask all Iranians to support our campaign. Send your support by post, fax or email or visit our campaign web-pages and sign your name. Also, please print paper copies of the support forms and circulate them amongst friends and relatives for their signature. Your help is needed to make this campaign a success, and thereby greatly enhance the chance for Iran to move towards a more civil and humane society.
