The former head of the Tehran police Brig. Gen. Farhad Nazari, center,

in Tehran Tuesday, July 11, 2000. Nazari had been accused of ordering a
brutal crackdown on university students on July 8, 1999. The unrest began
when extremists from the hard-line Islamic vigilante-group, with some help
from the police, attacked pro-democracy Tehran students in their university
dormitory, leaving one person dead. Naziri's lawyer Hosain Ali Aboui Naziri
sits at right, and Ali Pourmokhtar, legal representative of the Iranian
police, is on the left.
