Elections
Voters prepare and cast their ballots for the second round of parliamentary
elections in the city of Karaj, Iran, 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of
Tehran Friday, May 5 , 2000. Parliamentary run-off elections held Friday
in Iran could seal the victory of popular reformists who swept the first
round of voting - or open the way to more confrontation with Islamic hard-liners
who have shown they won't easily give up power. Reformists who have promised
increased social and political freedom look set to dominate parliament
for the first time since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution brought Shiite
clergy to power.
