Persepolis
President Mohammad Khatami visits Persepolis, the capital of ancient Persia's
Archaemenid dynasty, some 640 kms south of Tehran 16 January 2001. Khatami,
who has called for the restoration of the ancient site, was making only
the second visit by an Iranian president to Persepolis, where the former
Shah in 1971 invited dozens of kings and heads of state to celebrate 2,500
years of monarchy in Iran.
