Midget
By Massud Alemi
April 16, 1999
The Iranian
In the early days, I used to blame myself for my failures with women:
I must have been wearing a stained shirt; I was too eager; too transparent;
didn't make eye contact. No sense of humor whatsoever. No character. Did
my best to overcome my shortcomings: careless dressing, self-indulgence,
over-eagerness. But the outcome still was the same. Then I tried to be
a little more aggressive: went to a bar and walked straight up to the hottest
looking babe and announced to her that I knew what she wanted, and that
I had it. Said I'd do to her what no man had ever done to her. She was
a busty blond and, as they come, a couple of tiles short of a full minaret.
She said: "Oh, really? Like what?" ... GO

Names of Persian months and their forgotten meanings
By Massoume Price
April 15, 1999
The Iranian
The names of the 12 Persian months are taken from the ancient Zoroastrian
texts and the origins are deeply rooted in their belief system... Khashtra
Vairya (Shahrevar), is the lord of the sky, all stones, metals, and warriors
as wel as the protector of the poor and the weak. It means the desirable
dominion (keshvar e arezoo shodeh). Shahr means country or land and Var
means desirable. Asha Vahishta (Ordibehesht) lord of fire and noontime
heat means ultimate righteousness (behtarin rasty). Asha has many meanings
- righteousness, law, purity, sacred (Asha Zardosht) are only some of the
commonly used ones. Vohu Manah (Bahman) the protector of animals, means
good purpose (nik nahad). He is a powerful symbol of creative goodness
and the divinity personifying the principle of Asha (cosmic order). Haurvatat
(Khordad) protects all waters and means health or wholeness (rasaei and
kamali) ... GO

Aaberoo reezi
Iranian scam artists
By Ashkan Yekrangi
April 14, 1999
The Iranian
One typical Wednesday night here in southern California, I turned on
the TV and tuned to one of my favorite shows, 20/20. What I was about to
learn that night would shock me: well-to-do Iranians on welfare. Was it
possible? This group of people I had always thought of so highly was cheating
the system? How could it be? ... GO

Take a break
Entertainment thrives in Iran, for those who can afford it
April 13, 1999
The Iranian
The entertainment highlight of the evening [at Darband's Kuhsar Restaurant]
is a Mr. Asadi who is as cheesy a performer as I have ever seen. In too-long
pants and a light brown suit with a ski-collar white shirt and a silk scarf
around his neck (my cousin says the scarf emulates a tie), he has blow-dried
his thin hair to full cream-puff, has a flower in his collar, and since
he cannot serenade the women - this IS the Islamic Republic after all -
he caresses the men and croons in their ear, to such extent that our table
of three can no longer hold back our giggles at the embarrassed reaction
of the men. This Mr. Asadi sings forbidden songs by the pre-Revolutionary
singers, Haideh and Mahasti, Aref and even Marziyeh. All around the room,
the crowd claps, whistles, and sings along in a dreamy fit of nostalgia
and memory ... GO

The Iranian
Fall, 1992
I looked at the address I had written down from the Manhattan Yellow
Pages and the skyscaraper in front of me. Was this the right place? It
was not the most fashionable section of New York's south-side but I thought
I'd give it a shot.
The modeling agency was just two rooms; the reception area and the manager's
office. I sat and judged the handful of people waiting for their turn:
mmmaybe, forget it, you're kidding right?, Yes!, not bad...
- "Jeehanishe... Yavid?"
- "That's me."
- "You're next. Go on in."... GO
