* Senior Iran cleric urges factions to cool disputes

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's rival mainstream factions, united by their support for the Islamic system, must agree on the limits of political debate to avoid a repeat of this week's civil unrest, a senior cleric said Friday. Ayatollah Hasan Taheri-Khorramabadi told a prayer gathering in Tehran ``I am asking all the prominent figures of the political factions to draw a 'red line' so that if differences of opinions occur, the sanctities of the system and the revolution will not be violated.'' ... DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Iranian police kept Tehran under a tight leash Thursday, manning checkpoints across the Iranian capital and demanding identity papers as they searched for the students who ignited a week of pro-democracy protests. Several student protesters were missing, one student told an Iranian newspaper. A news agency reported that some people were being interrogated by the police -- and another newspaper described scenes of hysteria when one busload of detainees was driven off to prison ... WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iran is preparing to test launch later this summer a medium-range multi-stage missile that could have a range of up to 2,650 miles (4,250 km), an independent U.S. specialist said Thursday. The missile, code-named Kosar, would carry a version of Russia's RD-216 liquid-fuel rocket booster, the same engine which powered the Soviet Union's SS-5 missile, said Kenneth Timmerman, director of the Middle East Data Project ... * Three opposition leaders detained in Iran: opposition group

BRUSSELS, July 14 (AFP) - At least three Iranian opposition leaders were arrested at their homes in Iran early Wednesday, a representative of the Brussels-based opposition National Party told AFP. "Several leaders of the opposition were arrested last night by the secret police in their homes," Mehran Adib said. He identified them as People's Party members Bahran Namazi, Mehran Mir Abdol Baghi and Rosrow Seyf. Adib said police searched their homes and seized books, letters and newspapers.

* Iran says unrest over; big rally backs state

July 15, Helsinki (dpa) - The European Union (E.U.) appealed on Thursday to all groups in Iran to ``refrain from all kind of violence''. New York, July 14, 1999 (Human Rights Watch) -- Of the thirty-two grant recipients of this year's Hellman/Hammett grants, five hail from Iran. They are Hamid-Reza Jalei-Pour, Masahallah Shamss-Ol-Vaezin, Seyeed Ebrahim Nabvi, Akbar Ganji and Hojatolesam Mohssen Saeidzadeh. The grant program began in 1989 when the estates of American authors Lillian Hellman and Dashiel Hammett asked Human Rights Watch to design a program for writers in financial need as a result of expressing their views ... * Saudi Arabia says Iran must resolve islands dispute

KUWAIT, July 10 (Reuters) - Saudi Defence Minister Prince Sultan said on Saturday that improved Gulf Arab ties with Iran hinged on Tehran resolving a territorial dispute with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Gulf news agencies reported.
