Six Million Dollar Boy
... from hell!
By Siamack Salari
July 23, 1999
The Iranian
I was born in England in 1965. My mother and father (a doctor) have
both lived and worked in the UK since 1963.
The snippets which follow concern a short but memorable episode which
occurred during my childhood back in 1975, during a long summer holiday
to Mashhad. At that time I was a chubby ten year old who was obsessed with
the Six Million Dollar Man TV show. My days were spent running everywhere
and trying to jump up at branches of trees in very slow motion ... GO TO

How NOT to help arrested Jews in Iran
By Ali Akbar Mahdi
July 22, 1999
The Iranian
As a minority group in Iran, Iranian Jews experience an added hardship
living in a society governed by the strict implementation of Islamic laws.
Many Iranian Jews also experience prejudice, stereotyping, and ocassional
discrimination. However, majority of these Jews regard themselves Iranians
and would prefer to share the pain and joy of living in that country with
their fellow Iranians, be it Muslim, Bahahi, Zoroasterian, or Christian.
The arrest of 13 Jews in Iran accused of spying for the United States
and Israel has given rise to a worldwide campaign for their freedom. While
Western and Jewish concerns for the fate of these individuals is understandable
and admirable, their approach to the problem is at best ineffective and
at worst harmful to their cause ... GO

By Mansoureh Haqshenas & Koorosh Bayat
July 21, 1999
The Iranian
- Okay, so here it goes... In early July thousands of Iranian students
in more than a dozen cities staged unprecedented rallies, demanding greater
freedoms ...
- ... and the overthrow of the Islamic Republic.
- They did NOT ask for the overthrow of the regime!
- Yes they DID!
- Some of them condemaned Khamenei's support for the Ansar thugs. But
there was no "Death to the Islamic Republic".
- Doesn't matter. The whole movement was against the regime.
- Aziz joon! The students were very critical of the regime. But
most of them were pro-Khatami ... GO

Protest movement has no recognized leader
By Fereydoun Hoveyda
July 20, 1999
The Iranian
Most press reports have compared the six-day student demonstrations
in Tehran to the street manifestations that toppled the Shah twenty years
ago. It is true that the recent events were, in some ways, reminiscent
of scenes of the 1979 revolution. And probably they constitute the worst
unrest the Islamic republic has ever faced. But the differences are more
striking.
For one thing, the turmoil did not overthrow the regime. Moreover it
lacked open support among the bazaris, the workers, the clerics, and some
layers of the population suffering from the disastrous economic situation.
Finally, the protest movement has no recognized national leader ... GO TO
