Qajar Iran and the Rise of Reza Khan 1796-1925
By Nikkie R. Keddie
Mazda Publishers, 1999
This is a short history of the Iran prior to the advent of the Pahlavis
that gives an over view of the cultural and political environment of the
Qajar period.
Qajar Iran is primarily about the Qajars and has very little
background on Reza Khan or his actual rise but it discusses the political
environment that allowed him to take over the reins of power ... GO TO FEATURE

A national treasure
June 4, 1999, (EDMONTON SUN) - He is to Iranian soccer what Wayne Gretzky
is to Canadian hockey.
The weight of his nation rides on Ali Daei's shoulders and over the
span of his career the 30-year-old striker has more than accepted the responsibility
with the grace and dignity of Gretzky himself.
Now a member of Champions League finalists Bayern Munich of Germany,
Daei is in Edmonton for Canada Cup II in which he once again proudly represents
his country ... FULL

* Brilliant writing
Parviz Koohkan writes: I can not resist the urge to tell you how magnificent
was the piece on the wedding ["L.
A. wedding"]. It could have impressed as a piece of slick sarcasm,
or just funny, but to me it was one of the best pieces of writing by a
contemporary Iranian, dead or alive.
It was hilarious and it was sad and above all it was an incisive, dissecting,
revealing work, a brilliant picture of a distorted living space reflected
in a polished, spotless mirror, leaving the observant wonder where do we
go from here... FULL

* No mercy
Korosh N. writes: In connection to your little scenario ["I must be a
Jew"] I must say that in my entire connection and dealings with
[Jews] I have found that most of the generalizations about them appear
to be true and that because you are an Iranian or a Muslim they will never
trust you, will try to exploit you as much as possible and would put the
knife in the minute you turn your back.
Of course this is just my view. And believe me, I would absolutely adore
an idealistic world were everyone is happily getting along together, like
any Iranian. Who is the victim? ... FULL

In September 1997, the first blue plaque ever erected to the memory
of a rock star went up on a London building. It had taken Jimi Hendrix's
one-time girlfriend Kathy Etchingham five years to convince English Heritage,
but once convinced, they enjoyed placing his memorial next to the plaque
for George Fredrick Handel who used to live next door. HALLELUJAH HENDRIX
is the story of the blue plaque, and of all who were concerned with its
produciton and erection, culminating in the unveiling by Pete Townsend.

Iran Air shifting away from Boeing
June
4, 1999 (Middle East Economic Digest) - The Iranian aviation industry is

since the 1979 revolution and the main operator, Iran Air, has had frequent
