    Women

    Not their fault
Women generally - not inevitably - bow to socio-economic pressures

By Laleh Khalili

A woman - no matter how worldly, sophisticated, accomplished and educated - is considered incomplete if she is unmarried and has no children. Divorce is so shameful that many women tolerate physically abusive or unfaithful husbands in order not to bring shame upon their families (this pressure is even felt by Iranian women abroad whose families are still in Iran). Though some friends joke that you cannot find a virgin girl in Tehran anymore, and though anecdotal statistics of abortions by unwed women shows the prevalence of premarital sex in at least Tehran, the lucrative business of hymen reconstruction surgery attests to the actual value still placed on virginity ... Journey

Persian on the Inca Trail
From Persepolis to Machu Picchu

By Ali Hosseini

"from air to air, like an empty net,
dredging through streets and ambient atmosphere, I came"

- Pablo Neruda

I won't say I am the first Persian to walk the Inca Trail but I do believe I am one of the few. Machu Picchu is a travel destination at an international level and a goal of the young and fit, and some not so young and fit, is to walk the ancient stone trail that wends through the Peruvian Andes and leads finally to the lost Incan city. About my companions on the trek, I could say the less said the better, but then I wouldn't have a very long story, would I? First there were the Greeks. She thought she was Cleopatra and walked around Machu Picchu holding her large orange scarf up to the wind. He was young and tall and after the first day arranged to have one of the porters carry their pack. Then there were two young men from Holland whom we told apart by the color of their jeans. There was a group of young Americans of whom more later. And finally a couple from Italy who must be thought lucky to have understood so little English. Our guide, four porters, and the cook completed the group ... GO TO FEATURE

Tehran

I'm no pimp
Trying to set up a meeting with a hooker goes embarrassingly wrong

By Khosrow Tabrizi Motlagh

Salar stepped in with a well-dressed young woman. She looked, well, not exactly like other hookers I had seen in Tehran. She was well-dressed, if a bit "bad-hejaab". Okay, so her hair was dyed rather poorly, but she looked more like a girl you would see at Passage Golestan or even on Jordan Avenue. However before I had a chance to get a better look, Salar and I were very calmly and authoritatively told to leave so that the girl could speak more comfortably. I wasn't happy, but decided not to make a scene, given all the ears that were on us. We were talking in English and Persian ... GO TO FEATURE
