My city, Isfahan
The good, the bad and the ugly
By Mohammad Ali
May 21, 1999
The Iranian
I lost my father about five months ago and it was a devastating loss
for my family. I was planning to go home and be with my mother for a few
weeks and possibly bring her here to the U.S. A week before Noruz, however,I
got more devastating news: My mother had suffered a massive stroke. She
was not able to handle the loss of my father. I was back at home in Iran
within a few days and at least I had a chance to see her, though only briefly.
She died in my arms, five minutes before the new year (saal tahvil).
I would rather not discuss my parents' death. Instead I am going to
tell you a little bit about MY city - Isfahan; about the good, the bad
and the ugly ... GO

Layers of meaning
Among other things, Iranian movies encourage a "good
cry"
By Asghar Mossombagi

The Iranian
It seems to me that distanced exoticism mixed with a lack of overt political
elements in the most successful of recent Iranian films may be the key
to their success in the West. The first time I watched The White Balloon
I had this nagging feeling that the film was really aimed at a foreign
market. For instance, anybody who knows anything about southern Tehran
knows that the neighbourhoods depicted in the film are actually not the
norm; one would be hard pressed to find houses with heavy wooden doors
and decorative, be it rusty iron door knockers. The norm is the non-photogenic
one and two story numbers that litter haphazard alleyways and narrow streets
from Ghal-e Morghi and Javadieh to Meydan Shush ... GO

UNdoing NATO
Bypassing the UN in the name of humanitarian intervention
By Majid Tehranian
Beijing
May 20, 1999
The Iranian
PAX United Nations presents the best option that the world has so far
developed for the maintenance of international peace and security. Bypassing
the UN in the name of humanitarian intervention may prove to be a Trojan
Horse for hegemonic ambitions. Besides, in Kosovo, it has produced greater
tragedies that it set out to correct ... FULL

Kiarostami's nature
The film director's photo exhibit
Interview by Sadaf Abbasian
May 19, 1999
The Iranian
Abbas Kiarostami's nature photos were exhibited for a week at Tehran's
Gallery Golestan. Opening day was packed with fans, artists and women with
perfect noses hoping to star in Kiarostami's next film.
I fought my way through the crowd to have a little chat with the filmmaker
who was wearing his trademark shades ... GO

- Turn up the volume.
- Why? It's just the news.
- Turn it UP, please! I want to hear the results of the Israeli elections.
- ...
- God I'm so glad Netanyahu lost... he's such a jerk.
- You think a new "moderate" prime minister is going to change
things?
- It might... I hope so.
- I don't know... Those Jews won't let us live in peace.
- ... ? Those Jews? What are you talking about? This is the Israeli government.
You are expanding it to include ALL Jews?
- I'm talking about the Jewish State. The Jewish State is made up of
Jews.
- Hmmm... well, let me tell you something: I'm a Jew too. ... GO TO FEATURE

Searching for lost relatives, friends
May 17, 1999
The Iranian
It is not easy to find lost loved ones - friends or relatives. But the
Internet has a global reach and, you never know, someone somewhere might
see your message and voila! F. M. Paknejad posted a message and found her
father after a 23-year search. There are countless others, such as Debbie
Kimball-Ritter, who are still searching ... GO
