The Iranian
The newspapers may be critical, but they are also cautiously observing
boundaries set by the Islamic Republic itself and are operating within
a confined and exclusive circle, entry to which requires some sort of allegiance
to Islamic governance or at least Islam itself. While the outcry in defense
of Mohsen Kadivar by all the "lefty" newspapers was admirable,
there was no such similar outcry in defense of Abbas Amir-Entezam...
Perhaps the newspapers are testing the waters and are still afraid to
jump in whole-heartedly in defense of human rights for ALL, not just those
inside the Establishment. ... GO TO

The Iranian
I knew once I decided to come to Iran after 22 years, I would inevitably
face the Komiteh in some form. The environment had no doubt improved during
Khatami's presidency, but I knew well that events were always unpredictable
here. Although I had tried to prepare for it, when it happened I felt completely

myself out of such trouble ... GO TO FEATURE

Ripple effects of Iranian diplomacy
The view from Washington
By Alidad Mafinezam

The Iranian
The vast majority of Arab countries have rejoiced at the thought of
putting their troubled past with Iran behind them, welcoming the chance
to work with Iran for their mutual benefit and greater unity in the Muslim
world. But looking at these events from Washington -- where the Washington
Post managed to all but ignore the trip -- a more complex picture emerges
with U.S.-Iran relations at its core. ... GO

The Iranian
Last year, I started writing short narratives
for my own amusement. The Iranian has featured a couple of them
and since my other love is images, it seemed natural to combine the two.
The six pages you see here are the first in a
series of what is to become an illuminated manuscript. I love the tradition
of "faal gereftan", and kept that in the back of my mind as I
was working ... GO

From revolution to freedom
The young generation fights for what should be theirs

The Iranian
I finished some work, ate lunch, and left the office around in the early
afternoon. When I got to the entrance of Laleh Park, all seemed calm. A
few steps in, and still, everything was quiet and ordinary. A distant sound
could gradually be heard as I approached the center of the park. Then suddenly
I saw a few dozen security forces, and behind them, a few thousand people,
mainly young students, listening to a speech. Two hours later my respect
for the youth of Iran had grown exponentially...
This young generation is not so quick to run. They fight. They fight
for what should be theirs. They fight for the very basic rights I have
enjoyed outside Iran for so many years without always appreciating just
how precious they are ... GO
