The Iranian
From "Saffrom Sky: A Life Between Iran and America" by
Gelareh Asayesh (Beacon Press, November 1999). Asayesh grew up in Tehran.
Her family moved to the United States in 1977, shortly before the Islamic
Revolution transformed Iran. In 1990, after fourteen years of absence,
she returned to Iran for a visit. Since then, she has returned almost every
year, most recently for three months this past spring and summer. "Saffron

By Jonathan Lyons
TEHRAN, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Authorities have moved toward easing restrictions
on Iran's top dissident cleric, Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri,
under house arrest since 1997 for challenging the country's supreme leader,
a household member said on Tuesday.
An aide to Montazeri, speaking by telephone from the holy Shi'ite Moslem

* Delighted
Peyman Adjamian
writes: Just wanted to write to confirm Laleh Khalili's sentiments
regarding Chineh Internet cafe in Tehran ["Chai,
shirini & the Internet"]. I was recently in Iran for a month
and desparate to be able to check my email.
I was delighted to find that the opportunity existed to connect with
the rest of the world at Chineh, which is not far from where I live in
Kamranieh. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff very friendly. I have
no doubt that in the future we will see more such places in Iran.
* Bahai concern
Fereidoun Abbasi
writes: Mr. Sohrabi wrote in The Iranian ["Cyrus
meets Lincoln"]: "As a United States Senator what I hope
to achieve for Americans of Iranians descent is straightforward: end the
demonizing and stereotyping of Iran and Iranians. In fact, my first act
as an elected official will be demand a public apology from Senator Barbara
Boxer (Democrat from California) for calling the Iranian nation 'terrorist'
in her interview with CNN last February."
I hope you also work with the governments foreign human rights committee
especially with regards to the situation of the Bahai community in Iran.
Recently, the UN Commission on Human Rights again expressed concern for
Iran's Bahais.
* Politics: Sara Amir for California
State Assembly
California State Senator Tom Hayden (D-23rd District, Los Angeles),
who is forced out of the State Senate by term limits, has decided at the
last minute to NOT run in the 42nd State Assembly District. As a result
of Hayden dropping out of the race, former (1998) Green candidate for Lt.
Governor Sara Amir has decided to enter the race on the last day. To support
Sara, email her at <saraamir@earthlink.net>
or call at 323-654-9717 and ask her where to send the contribution. In
1998, Amir received 3.1% for Lt. Governor, the highest percentage any third
party candidate has received for that office since 1938.
