Artists unite!
Yari Ostovany has brought artists together on the web

By Maryam Ovissi
November 24, 1999
The Iranian

I first became familiar with Yari Ostovany through his famous web site, Museum of Iranian Contemporary Artists, which has brought together hundreds of Iranian artists together. He is an exceptional artist who dives beneath the surface of a painting to its core. Yet, Yari is able to transit from his intimate and personal space into an open and giving individual who has dedicated a portion of his life to creating an arena for all Iranian artists to come together and share their work with the world ... Interview with Arash Forouhar

By Haleh Vaziri
November 23, 1999
The Iranian

Vaziri: Are you saying that Khatami lacks the power to pursue a thorough investigation of your parents' murders?

Forouhar: My parents' murders, the disappearance of other intellectuals -- these are acts against us, against the movement that opposes the Islamic Republic. These acts are not against President Khatami. Whoever did this had my parents' under 24-hour surveillance, because they worried that my father was leading the students and serving as a source of inspiration or as an alternative to the government ...

Whoever killed my parents had planned it for months. They tried to pressure my parents -- to break their souls. But my mother and father believed in what they were doing and would not stop just because of this pressure. These people watched my parents and waited until they were alone to attack them. These people were afraid of my parents ... GO TO FEATURE

About three months ago, I got an email asking if I was interested in a photograph from Abadan. This wasn't just any photo. It was my home, 110 Braim, where I spent my last years before leaving for America to go to high school in 1976 ...

Shahripour also sent along a bunch of other photos from Abadan's landmarks. You might not recognize some of them. But in all of them at least some bits and pieces of the past remain, like the Golestan Club's iron fence (I noticed it immediately) ... GO TO FEATURE

The dragon kite
Short story

By Reza Ordoubadian
November 20, 1999
The Iranian

No, there was no hope, and he must have that kite. Imagine letting the string slowly roll from your hand and the wind lift the kite up; faster and faster the string will roll, and the kite will rise near the sun, glittering. He knew exactly how to tug and pull to get the kite higher and higher; there will be music in the air, the kite playing against the wind, and all the angels in heaven will gather to hear the music and see the kite; they will all ask who was flying that beautiful dragon kite so high in the sky, and he will hide behind the huge stones and grape vines. Nobody will see him, but they will know someone who really can fly a kite was mastering the string. His older sister might tell on him, but she could be bribed with a couple of multicolored rooster candies.

"Are you still thinking about it?" the old man asked, smiling.

"I will buy it all right," he replied, fire inside his eyes ... GO TO FEATURE

We are reexamining notions of what it means to be whatever

By Roozbeh Shirazi

The Iranian

Let me give you a vague introduction to who we have turned out to be: We like A Tribe Called Quest and ghormeh sabzi, we smoke pot (but don´t tell our parents) and we are bad at taarof but still understand it. We feel uncomortably American around Iranians, and defiantly Iranian around foreigners...

Are we Iranian? American? American-Iranian or vice versa blah blah blah ... GO TO FEATURE
