* Shell Seems Near Pact to Spend About $1 Billion on Iranian Fields
GENEVA, Oct 8, (Wall Street Journal) -- Royal Dutch/Shell Group, one
of the world's largest privately held oil companies, appears to be close
to agreeing to invest about $1 billion (935.2 million euros) to develop
two oil fields in Iran, which is still subject to U.S. sanctions. A Shell
spokeswoman in London said Thursday that the company was in detailed discussions
in Iran to develop the Soroush and Nowruz oil fields. "We are hopeful

ALMATY, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Italian oil company ENI stirred up a long-standing
dispute on possible routes for oil exports from the landlocked Caspian
basin on Thursday by calling for exports through Iran. This put ENI firmly
at odds with the oft-stated wishes of the United States and Turkey, and
exposed sharp disagreements between regional powers seeking influence over

* Saudi Arabia to launch exclusive trade fair in Iran
TEHRAN, Oct 7 (AFP) - Saudi Arabia will hold its first trade fair since
the 1979 Islamic revolution in Tehran next month, an official from the
visiting Saudi trade delegation said, quoted by the official IRNA news
agency Thursday. "In order to expand the political-economic relations
between Tehran and Riyadh, the first exclusive Saudi (trade) fair will
be held in Tehran from November 14 to 19," said Abdullah bin Mahfuz,

TEHRAN, Oct 6 (AFP) - Iran's conservative-dominated parliament began
a closed-doors review of President Mohammad Khatami's five-year economic
plan on Wednesday amid criticism that the ambitious project could be unrealistic.
"Experts estimate that the plan cannot ensure the fulfilment of the
government's economic projections" of an annual growth rate of six
percent, said MP Mohammad-Baqer Nobakht, a member of parliament's directory

TEHRAN, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Iran plans to build five new petrochemical
plants worth $6 billion with the help of foreign investors by March 2005,
a senior official said on Tuesday. Mohammad Khayat, a member of the board
of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC), said three of the projects
had been put to international bidding and the other two would be put on

* Iran seeks $10 bln foreign capital in mines, metals
TEHRAN, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Iran is seeking $10 billion in foreign and
private investment to develop its mines and metals industry, in a drive
to ease reliance on oil, Mines and Metals Minister Eshaq Jahangiri said
on Monday. Jahangiri told a news conference 100 projects would be offered
for international tender at a conference in Tehran on October 19-20. He
said 30 of the projects were in steel and aluminum but did not say if the
$10 billion included $3.5 billion in foreign capital being sought for the

* Khatami opens Tehran's biggest international trade fair since revolution
TEHRAN, Oct 2 (AFP) - President Mohammad Khatami on Saturday opened
Iran's biggest international trade fair since the 1979 Islamic revolution,
paying particular attention to the stand of its largest European trade
partner Germany with whom ties have been strained recently. Crowds of people
gathered around the president, greeting and applauding him. More than 72
countries, 1,466 Iranian companies and 785 foreign firms are due to take
