On my first day in Tehran, two days before the sixth parliamentary elections, the city was bustling with activity. On this particularly bright and sunny winter day, Tehranis went about their business as they were constantly interrupted on the street by hired hands passing out thousands of tiny fliers advertising for the many candidates vying for Majlis seats.

"I don't want to vote this time, but my friends say we should at least choose the better of two evils and keep the likes of [former president Aytollah Akbar] Rafsanjani out of power," a young cabbie told me on the way to this Internet cafe from where I an writing in northern Tehran. "But I will vote, just to support Khatami and what he is trying to do." >>> GO TO FEATURE

Excerpt from chapter 1 of The Poet Game by Salar Abdoh (Picador, 2000).

Abdoh was born and raised in Iran. During the revolution his father had to leave the country quickly, as he was on the original list of fifty or so people who were to have been executed. He was the owner of the Persepolis soccer team. He died a few months after moving the family to the U.S. in 1979 >>> GO TO FEATURE

The other day, Faramarz asked me to substitute for him at an important meeting with a Holleywood producer. He wanted me to pitch one of his many screenplays. He would have pitched it himself, except that there was a semi-weekly bi-annual end-of-the-month special clearance sale at a belt buckle store and he just had to be there. I told him I didn't know anything about movies, but he assured me that neither do movie producers, otherwise why would anyone make movies with Steven Segal as the star? Faramarz, however, told me that this was an important producer, a special one, who had produced such big hits as "Deep Volcano", "Extreme Armageddon", "Runaway Bridal Shower", and "Buy Hard, Part 18" >>> GO TO FEATURE
