Afghan refugees being sent back to Afghanistan

The Iranian

Imagine Germany loading tens of thousands of Iranian refugees onto buses and sending them back to Iran. Of course, it would never happen. The international community would be outraged. Germany would be accused of racism and intolerance.

So does anyone have a good reason why Afghans have to be expelled from Iran? Are Afghans taking away jobs from Iranians? Are many of them involved in crime? Aren't these the same excuses Western countries use against undesirable refugees? What happened to that Persian hospitality we always brag about? >>> GO TO FEATURE

Rock Rolls Once More in Iran
As Hard-Liners Back Pop Revival

By Daneil Pearl
The Wall Street Journal
June 2, 2000

TEHRAN, Iran -- In a basement studio here, Iranian pop singer Alireza Assar and his crew are mixing their latest rock ballad. Mr. Assar's strong solo voice rings out in Farsi, singing, "We should find love in the rain." As the music swells, an electric guitar begins to wail, and women's voices take up the song.

If Iran's political hard-liners ever heard this, there'd be hell to pay, right?

Wrong. In fact, the conservatives sponsor Mr. Assar. They own this digital recording studio, they promote his $5-a-ticket concerts, and they approve each of his songs before its release >>> FULL TEXT

Putting promises to test
Proposed agenda for new parliament

In an open letter to the new parliament in Iran, the Iranian Human Rights Working Group highlighted the systematic and continuous violation of human rights in Iran and took the deputies to task on their election promises to work for the betterment of the human rights of the Iranian people. The group noted that on one hand "Iran is, both structurally and operationally, amongst the worst violators of human rights in the world" and on the other hand "the level of public awareness and demand for freedom, democracy and human rights" amongst the Iranian people has never been so widely pronounced >>> FULL TEXT

* Golden bridge

Amir Shirazi writes in reference to the upcoming 1000th issue of The Iranian Times: I would also like to join others who have congratulated you for the monumental goal you pursued rather single- handedly leading to such remarkable success. A hundred sincere congratulations.

If I had enough to afford it, I would have awarded you with a small symbolic golden bridge. You really did a great service by building a firm and friendly bridge between all Iranian generations on this side of the water.

* Other side of the story

East Syracuse writes: After reading eceperts from Tara Bahrampour's book "To See and See Again", I was wondering why someone doesn't talk to the family and people that knew Betty Mahmoody [author of "Not Without My Daughter"] when she supposedly was in Iran with her husband ...

I think Dr. Mahmoody was probably tired of her attitude and was going to ship her back to the U.S. and who could blame him? Of course he wanted to keep his daughter, he loved her, but Betty Mahmoody left the country without permission according to what she wants everyone to believe and soooooo I wanted to know if Dr. Mahmoody put out a warrant for her arrest over there in Iran for kidnapping his daughter and taking her out of the country of Iran. I really wish someone would go there and find out the truth then write a book about it and sell it in the U.S. too so people can read his side of the story too! >>> FULL TEXT

Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

May grief and sadness come to the unfaithful heart,

And in this world may betrayal play a smaller part.

Sadness is the only friend who stays with me, still true,

And for that, loyal sadness, a thousand thanks to you.
