Democracy is paramount
Lessons from the aftermath of the '53 coup
By Asghar Massombagi
June 23, 2000
The Iranian
A few weeks ago The New York Times printed the CIA's history
of the 1953 coup that toppled the government of Dr. Mossadegh. These papers
allegedly show the extent of the United States involvement in organizing
and leading the coupe, as well as the full co-operation of the British
Intelligence service and the royalist elements in the Iranian army...
What is really interesting in this whole story is a re-examination of
the legacy of the coup, which is something that has never really been discussed
in Iran. The coup ended a period of relative freedom of the press and political
activities >>>

Unrequited love
By Padideh Jan

The Iranian
Perhaps I ought to say here and now that the most worrying sentence
in the world to me is, "I'd like to have a word with you about something."
It leaves you in the agonizing doubt about what exactly. The feeling of
anxiety that started with Saeid's telephone call on that January morning
had increased during what seemed like a very long, and slow fifteen-mile
drive down Interstate 101 to Palo Alto. It'd been just over a month since
he'd privately presented me with a diamond solitaire, and I'd felt that
all my anxieties about our relationship had been put to rest >>> GO

Tehran's good side
It's there. Just have to look for it
By Najmeh Fakhraie
June 20, 2000
The Iranian
When I think of Tehran the first things I remember are drug addicts,
homeless children, heavy traffic and rude people. Not a good sign. But
no matter how awful it might be, no matter how polluted or dirty, it's
still MY city and therefore it deserves to be loved. If there's a million
things going wrong with it, if things aren't going too well, the only ones
responsible are the people who live in it. Me included.
Unlike what most think, Tehran is really a beautiful place. Anyone whose
looked up at the sky on a clear day know's what I'm talking about >>>

Googoosh's historic comeback
By Jahanshah Javid
June 19, 2000
The Iranian
Googoosh is back. No need to rub your eyes. It's not a dream. And no,
it's not another misprint you frequently see in The Iranian. Googoosh
arrived in Toronto last week, accompanied by a new band AND new songs,
accoding to Paris-based concert promoter Abbas Bakhtiari...
Thank heaven. It's a miracle. It really is. Iranians -- including many
who didn't care much for her light pop songs before the revolution -- have
been waiting and praying for Googoosh's return. So much so that if I were
the messiah, I would be jealous >>>

30 Khordad
Poem

The Iranian
Thanks to The Iranian Times I realized it is the 19th anniversary
of the 30th of Khordad massacre (June 19, 1981). Has it really been 19
years? The realization made me look up a poem I wrote several years ago
>>>
