Nosy relatives
People in Iran quickly get involved in your situation
March 30, 2000
The Iranian
Letter to The Iranian:
The article written by Cyrus Raafa ["Real
Iranian girls"] inspired me to go to Iran during last December.
I corresponded with this brother for a while and then got my papers together
and went to Iran for the first time in my life, having been born in the
United States in 1975.
People in Iran quickly get involved in your situation, watch out. There
are the doomsayers, the jealous, and the troublemakers who try to ruin
your little pleasures for reasons you'll never understand! Unlike Cyrus,
I speak Farsi pretty well, having gone to a Persian school here in the
U.S., and I could figure out the innuendos and slights made by this or
that nosy relative!>>>

Getting down to business
The future of Iranian assets and claims in the U.S.
March 29, 2000
The Iranian
In her speech on Friday, March 17, the U.S. Secretary of State, Mrs.
Albright, made reference to the Iranian assets that the United States froze
in the aftermath of the hostage crisis in 1979. It always had been that
any normalization of relations between these two countries had to consider
the unfreezing of the Iranian assets. What was never clear was the size
and nature of the assets. In her speech, Mrs. Albright indicated that much
of the frozen assets were turned over to Iran after 1981. Yet, she also
intimated that there is more that was not turned over >>>

A voice in the crowd
Arash heard the closing whistle of the rocket, his insides
telling him that it was close
By Babak Morvarid
March 28, 2000
The Iranian
As Arash was about to read, the power went out. This happened often
in Tehran, especially when there was an Iraqi air raid. The planes would
come and the alarm would sound. Then the lights went out, the alarm sounding
loud and louder.
Arash's neighbor's father used to become very nervous in the beginning.
"Give me a Valium, doctor!" he would ask Arash's dad, sweating
and shaking in the hand holding a cigarette. "It would be better for
it to hit us," he would say. "Yes sir. Otherwise, this way, I
will lose my mind!" He made everyone nervous. >>>

Free spirits
Portraits of Iranian artists

The Iranian
While the power struggle between reformists and conservatives rages
on, one tends to overlook the enormous impact of artists on Iranian society
at large. Extremism, censorship and repression have marginalized many artists.
More than a few have even died for their beliefs. But their free spirit
and humanity have been a major source of inspiration and earned them a
special place in people's hearts.>>>
