The history of Jews in Iran
By Massoume Price
May 12, 2000
The Iranian
Iranian Jews are amongst the oldest inhabitants of the country. The
origin of the Jewish diaspora in Persia is closely connected with various
events in Israel's ancient history. At the time of the Assyrian king, Tiglath-pileser
III (727 BC) thousands of Jews were expelled from Israel and forced to
settle in Media. According to the annals of another Assyrian king, Sargon
II, in 721 BC, Jewish inhabitants of Ashdod and Samaria in present day
Israel were resettled in Media after their failed attempt against Assyrian
dominance. Records indicate that 27,290 Jews were forced to settle in Ecbatana
(today's Hamadan) in northwest and Susa in southwest Persia. These settlers
are referred to as one of the 'Ten Lost Tribes of Israel' in biblical records.

Under layers of taarof
Tehran's museums where you find the substance of yourself
By Laleh Khalili
May 10, 2000
The Iranian
Discovering Tehran's museums accidentally is bliss. You have wandered
around the Tehran bazaar all day, your calves are bruised where the hand-trolleys
have collided with you, the back of your throat itches from the pollution,
and your arms and shoulders ache from all the times the crowd has jostled
you. You suddenly turn to the right, and right there at the end of the
square, you see the glimpse of a garden, with a reflecting pool, and you
pay the fee just to escape from outside and you discover the delightful
Golestan Palace which has been turned into a collection of museums and
galleries. You are awed by the sight of parrots squawking in the massive
trees and swans floating in the reflecting pools and by the tenderness
with which these 18th-19th century buildings have been constructed and
decorated >>>

Summer is almost here and we want to be there
Photographs by Mansour Sane'

The Iranian
It seems like no photographer's resume is complete without a series
on Persepolis. These are from Mehr & Mah (1999, Daneshnameh
Fars publishers) by Mansour Sane', whose earlier work on monuments and
scenic points in Fars has also been featured in The Iranian.
Mehr & Mah has reached us at the right time. Summer is a
few weeks away, we are more nostalgic than usual, and there aren't many
things that remind us of home as powerfully as Persepolis >>>
