Defendant facing death penalty is freed on bail
TEHRAN, Nov 16 (AFP) - A former Iranian communist facing a possible
death sentence for his role in a controversial political seminar in Germany
has been released on bail, a court official told AFP on Thursday. Khalil
Rostam-Khani, who attended the April conference in Berlin which Iranian
authorities deemed anti-Islamic, paid 87,000 dollars' bail to be released,

Satirist apologizes in court
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - In testimony as funny as it was serious, Iran's
leading satirist pleaded guilty Wednesday to a charge of insulting government
officials and apologized for lampooning them in his writings. Ever the
comic, Ebrahim Nabavi cracked a joke at the expense of his own lawyer that

Sahabi defends participation in "un-Islamic" Berlin seminar

Guardian council overrules law to raise minimum marriage age
TEHRAN, Nov 14 (AFP) - A conservative-led Iranian oversight body has
ruled that girls can still be married as young as nine with parental permission,
quashing an attempt by the reformist parliament to raise the minimum age
to 15, and 18 for boys. The Council of Guardians said the measure passed
by parliament late last month was contrary to Islamic law, which sets the

UN committee calls on Iran to respect due process of law
UNITED NATIONS, Nov 10 (AFP) - Expressing concern about executions and
torture, the human rights committee of the UN General Assembly has called
on Iran to respect due process of law. The committee Thursday voted by
58 to 53, with 48 abstentions, for a resolution calling on the Islamic
government "to ensure that capital punishment will not be imposed

German group calls on Berlin to support Iranian reformers on trial

Hajjarian back at work after assassination bid
