Poetry

The clear mirror
Translations of eight Hafiz poems

By Reza Ordoubadian
January 10, 2001
The Iranian

For the past few years, I have been translating the ghazals of Hafiz, hoping to preserve both the spirit and the form of the original poems in English-- as much as the art of translation will allow such a rendition.

I realize that a complete, "whole," irrevocably unchanged translation is impossible, even in the same language. When we talk about poetry in English or in Farsi, we do render those poems into a translated form to discuss their contents freely >>> GO TO FEATURE

Incredible

Do you remember "Mammad Naboodo Bebini"? It was a "nowhe" religious song made after the liberation of Khorramshahr from the Iraqis. It became a kind of national anthem for Basiji forces. Believe it or not, they have now come out with the techno version in Iran. Incredible >>> LISTEN HERE

More Letters

* Feminazis are on the move

Reza writes: It's quite enlightening to witness the race debate culminate to such new compromises ["Thank Gof for..."]. I personally have nothing against individuals from different races and nationalities conjoining in holy matrimony as long as the interests surpass that of the phallic nature.

However, I see that the argument has taken a slight twist. It's not really about Darryl and Maryam's controversial interracial marriage anymore, rather Iranian females have found themselves a sufficient excuse to unleash their psycho-sexual frustrations upon the infamous "Iranian bigot cowards". In other words Iranian men >>> FULL TEXT

* Modern slaves

Haleh writes: It boggles my mind how we as Iranians are discriminated against just as bad as Blacks and yet we are in such deep denial about it. We think buying a big house and a BMW qualifies us as being a member of the "majority"!

It makes me sad to read some of the racist letters sent to your site. It reminds me how ignorant we really are; how based on this very ignorance we gave away our country to radicals.

Just remember that we are the modern day-slaves in this country! Do not put yourselves above any other race!

* No bleeps

Farzan Navab writes: Congratulations to you for printing the letter by "Unlimited Madness". It shows that you are not afraid to print four-letter words that in other media such as broadcasting would have been "bleeped" out.

But more than the content of this letter I was fascinated by the pseudonym of it's author. Unlimited Madness is obviously a contradiction in terms. For madness can not have limits >>> FULL TEXT

* Superior site of an excelsior echelon

Ali & Mahnaz Mafee writes: My nomenclature is Hazzan. I compliment you fervently on this fabulous forum for Farsi and non-Farsi followers. I have just recently been cognizant of these transmissions.

I am an IranAm living just east of A2, Michigan (a defacto colloquialism). I find this superior site of an excelsior echelon >>> FULL TEXT

    Poem

    Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

    Wrap my secrets within your soul, and hide,

    Even from myself, this state of mine.

    Wrap me in your soul: face to face with me,

    Your faith will transform my worst blasphemy.
