Separation

The mirror and the book
Till we meet again, till we part again

By Hossein Samiei
January 26, 2001
The Iranian

I hear the ever-questioning, the unyielding voice from that distant corner of mind. But time is short. I bring my head down and feel the Book's velvet cover with my lips and smell its old age. I walk under the tray to the other side, turn around gently, and look into the mirror again. I kiss the Book and let my forehead touch it fleetingly, before I pick up my suitcase and walk outside >>> GO TO FEATURE

Identity

Holiday confusion
I think I will stick to birthdays and Earth days

By Iran Javid Fulton
January 26, 2001
The Iranian

My relatives used to give me the guilt trip if I didn't call them on Noruz and say "Eid-e shomaa mobaarak" but they have pretty much accepted that it's not going to happen. It's hard to get into Noruz when no one else around you is into it! >>> GO TO FEATURE

I'll call
Short story

Kaveh Sartipi
January 26, 2001
The Iranian

I received and email from a close friend, Nooshin. She had met this really cute girl and thought that I should give her a call. At first I laughed.

"Come on, who are you kidding? You want me to call up a girl I've never met?" I wrote. "I can barely talk to the girl who sits next to me in my speech class." I pressed send and laughed some more and went on to the next email. >>> GO TO FEATURE

Citizen Pahlavi
Holding on to the monarchy will not do him any good

January 25, 2001
The Iranian

Reza Pahlavi has many things going for him. Thanks to the religious fanaticism of the clerical establishment, there's an undeniable sense of nostalgia towards his late father, Mohammad Reza Shah.

The people who voted overwhelmingly for reform in recent elections, have become deeply disillusioned, as all avenues for peaceful progress appear to be blocked. Whatever hope there was of seeing the Islamic Republic gradually transform into a democracy has evaporated to a large extent. But the good news for Reza Pahlavi ends just about there >>> GO TO FEATURE

Food

Bad service
Customers not respected at Iranian restaurants

By Mahmood Kanani
January 24, 2001
The Iranian

I don't like to nag. The food industry is very competitive and I don't want Iranian restaurants to go out of business. Where else can I find chelo kabab soltani with somagh? But I also want to enjoy the dinning experience too. I doubt a non-Iranian will ever return after experiencing what I've been through. But the managers know we are hooked, like junkies >>> GO TO FEATURE

Something missing
Paintings by Laleh Mizani

January22, 2001
The Iranian

The passion play in Laleh Mizani's paintings (many of them) is tortured. There's plenty of love (lust?) but something's either missing or there's an element of sadness -- things that people who are in touch with their senses -- and the real world -- can perfectly understand >>> GO TO FEATURE

Book

Failed policy?
A book chronciles U.S. sancxtions against Iran

By Bruce Zagaris
January22, 2001
The Iranian

Hossein Alikhani's Sanctioning Iran: Anatomy of a Failed Policy (2000, I.B. Tauris Publishers) masterfully weaves a colorful discussion of the start and evolution of U.S. sanctions against Iran. The success of the book is the way it blends the various components of U.S. sanctions policy towards Iran: history, diplomacy, economic policy, military policy, the technical evolution of the laws and administrative sanctions and the way in which U.S. agencies have enforced their unique sanctions against Iran >>> GO TO FEATURE

Book

Export strategy
Analyzing the structural framework of Iran's exports

January 22, 2001
