FEATURE
* Iraqi gets cool reception in Iran, (New York Times) - If Washington is curious about Iran's reaction to the current crisis between Iraq and the United States, it has only to look at the reception given here to Iraq's foreign minister, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf. During his weeklong visit, which ended Friday, Iranian officials had little time for him. There was no fanfare -- no joint news conference, no briefings by officials -- and only brief news coverage with sketchy details about the visit. He was not even invited to spend his days sitting around sipping tea. It is Ramadan, and everyone in the government offices is fasting.... full text

CLINTON
* Iran: Clinton needs tight "iron belt," (Reuters) - Talk of resuming ties between Iran and the United States can only be revived after a tight iron belt is presented to President Bill Clinton with a lock and key for his wife Hillary, an Iranian newspaper said on Monday. On the eve of the president's State of the Union address to Congress, Clinton has given a new meaning to the word ``union,'' Iran News said in a commentary on the sex scandal surrounding him over charges of misconduct with a young White House intern... full text
* Sassan Behzadi on Clinton scandal Interent site, (Newsbytes) - Internet gossip columnist Matt Drudge's "Drudge Report" World Wide Web site has been deluged with so many hits from people who want to find out the "inside dirt" on the most recent scandal to rock the White House, that it cannot keep up with the demand, Newsbytes has confirmed. Drudge has been reporting since last weekend on an alleged affair between President Clinton and a former White House intern, and possible obstruction of justice charges involving the former intern's testimony in the Paula Jones case. Sassan Behzadi, a spokesperson for LA Internet, Drudge's Web host provider, said that the columnist's site has been getting beat up with "millions of hits per minute" from Web users... full text

* Majlis sets budget, limits spending rises, (Reuters) - Iran's parliament on Monday passed a 230.4 trillion rial state budget for the next Iranian year, controlling increases in spending as a response to falling oil revenues. The dollar value of the budget could range from $131.7 billion, if calculated at the official rate used for essential state accounts, down to $76.8 billion at Iran's other official rate, which the government has been using increasingly.... full text
* EU moves towards relaxation of boycott, (Reuters) - European Union foreign ministers on Monday ordered a review of the bloc's ban on high-level contacts with Iran, saying a policy of general sanctions was no longer appropriate to the changing mood of the Islamic republic. Foreign Secretary Robin Cook of Britain, which holds the EU's rotating presidency for the first half of 1998, said the 15-member EU had instructed political directors to examine the policy and report back in a month's time... full text
* MKO urges EU to uphold Iran sanctions, (Reuters) - An exiled Iranian opposition group on Friday urged the European Union not to soften its line against Iran, citing what it said was widespread human rights abuses in the Islamic republic. The National Resistance Council called on a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels next Monday to impose sanctions on Tehran and not to be deceived into thinking new Iranian President Mohammad Khatami was a moderate... full text

HUMAN RIGHTS
* Protests at arrest of journalist, (AFP) - TEHRAN, Jan 25: The liberal Islamic oppositition in Iran protested on Sunday against the arrest last month of a left-leaning journalist. Akbar Ghanji, an official with monthly literary magazine "Rahe-No" review (New Way) and a former employee of the literary review "Kian," has been held since December 6 with no explanation from the authorities, according to the opposition. Around 40 people, mainly members of the Freedom Movement of Iran (FMI), signed a petition against the arrest and demanded that Ghanji be given legal representation. The petition said that Ghanji was probably arrested for a speech he made in the southern city of Shiraz. Ghanji's wife recently sent a letter to President Mohammad Khatami asking him to intervene personally to free her husband.
* Complaints against airport security
As the new year brings new airport security measures from the FAA and U.S. carriers, the American Civil Liberties Union has announced it will be closely watching as the programs are implemented and will step in if it appears the system disproportionately targets certain ethnic groups. An Internet page has been established for passengers to submit complaints: <//www.aclu.org/forms/complain_aviation.html>

Clinton & The Pope
The Pope and President Clinton died on the same day, but due to an administrative foul up, Clinton was sent to heaven and the Pope was sent to hell. The Pope explained the situation to the Devil, he checked out all of the paperwork, and the error was acknowledged. The Pope was told, however, that it would take about 24 hours to fix the problem and correct the error. The next day, the Pope was called in and the Devil said his good-byes and off he went to heaven. On his way up, he met Clinton who was on his way down, and they stopped to chat.
Pope: Sorry about the mix up.
President Clinton: No problem.
Pope: Well, I'm really excited about going to heaven.
President Clinton: Why's that?
Pope: All my life I've wanted to meet the Virgin Mary.
President Clinton: You're a day late.
