We are outraged to learn of the brutal and gruesome killing of two prominent
opposition leaders in Iran, Mr. Dariush Forouhar and Mrs. Parvaneh Eskandari-Forouhar
on Sunday, November22, 1998. We are sending this fax/e-mail to you to
ask for your expression of condemnation and outrage against this extra-judicial
execution. We are also very concerned about the safety and security of
other opposition members in Iran, including Mr. Abbas Amir-Entezam who

* Iranian intellectual dies in suspicious circumstances
TEHRAN, Nov 26 (AFP) - Magid Sharif, an Iranian writer, journalist and
translator close to liberal opposition circles, has died here in suspicious
circumstances, it was learned here Thursday from associates and a newspaper.
According to the moderate newspaper Hamshahri, the official organ of Tehran
municipality, the 58-year-old Sharif "apparently died of a heart attack"
on November 19. Sharif had left his home after telling his family that
he was going to the eastern city of Mashhad to attend the funeral of an
Iranian religious figure...

London, November 26, (BBC) - A religious court in Iran has given a suspended
prison sentence to one of the country's prominent dissident clergymen,
Mohsen Saiedzadeh. He was arrested in June, but charges against him were

* Norway to send ambassador back to Iran
OSLO, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Norway said on Friday
it would reinstate an ambassador in Tehran in the New Year after cutting
ties in 1995 over a shooting connected with the Salman Rushdie affair.
The Norwegian Foreign Ministry said Norway had decided to reestablish contacts
after assurances in September from the Iranian government it would not
assist or reward anyone carrying out the religious fatwa, or decree, permitting
the killing of Rushdie. It said there had been ``other positive developments''

TEHRAN, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Iran's police said on Wednesday it had arrested
a number of suspects in the killing of a veteran opposition leader and
his wife, as supporters of the dissidents called for a mass funeral. The
official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted police spokesman Colonel Ali Moqaddam
as saying ``a number of suspects have been arrested in connection with

killers of a veteran opposition leader and his wife, the official Iranian

were investigating the weekend stabbings of Dariush Forouhar, leader of

TEHRAN, Nov 25 (Reuters) - President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday issued
a strong plea for freedom of thought within Iran's Islamic system, warning
the country's newpaper barons that any other course would lead to social
explosion. ``Thought could be blocked for a short while, but it would only
be driven underground and eventually lead to social explosion,'' said Khatami,
a moderate Shi'ite Moslem cleric and himself a former newspaper publisher...

TEHRAN, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Tuesday
ordered urgent investigations into the murder of a veteran opposition leader
and his wife, saying the people had to be reassured the government could
uphold the law. ``It is necessary that a special committee be set up to
seriously follow up the case of the crime...so that God willing the perpetrators
would promptly be identified and pay for their crime,'' state television
quoted Khatami as saying in a letter to Interior Minister Abdolvahed Mousavi-Lari...

* Press says Forouhar slain dissident supported Ocalan
TEHRAN, Nov 24 (Reuters) - An Iranian dissident murdered at the weekend
was rallying support for detained Kurdish separatist Abdullah Ocalan, a
government official was quoted as saying on Tuesday. The Tehran Times quoted
the Interior Ministry official as saying Dariush Forouhar, found murdered
with his wife, was organising support for Ocalan, who is under house arrest
in Italy from where Turkey has been pressing for his extradition ... FULL

* Sahabi found guilty of publishing lies
London, Nov 23, (BBC) - An Iranian court has found the editor of an
opposition magazine guilty of insulting the armed forces and publishing
lies about a special clerical court. Iranian television did not say what
punishment, if any, was handed down to Ezzatollah Sahabi, editor of the
Iran-e-Farda magazine. It said the jury decided that he desreved leniency
and dropped all other charges against him but gave no details. Mr Sahabi
was a minister in the early days of the Islamic revolution.
