Wikipedia: The Iranian languages (also called Iranic languages) form a subfamily of the Indo-Iranian languages which in turn is a subgroup of Indo-European language family. They have been and are spoken by Iranian peoples. The Iranian languages are considered in three stages of Old (until 400 BCE), Middle (400 BCE – 900 CE), and New (since 900 CE) stages. From the Old Iranian languages the better understood and recorded ones are Old Persian (a language of Achaemenid Iran) and Avestan (the language of Zarathushtra). Dear APFSM, that's an alternative, yet fun way of looking at it!Though I'm not sure whether Pashmi or Gavi fall under the category of Indo-Eurpean languages! :)
Arj that's a spelling error by wiki, they mean risheh pashmaloo
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Wed Dec 28, 2011 05:46 PM PSTPashtoon is an error, they're trying describe the new mullah class with their Risheh pashmaloo who occupy Iran, since their speech doesn't count for farsi and their logic would make anyone grow horns I would have named Irans 2nd language Gaavi, as in moo-moo, not pashtun or pashmaloo. Really Sad to see Gaavi become irans 2nd language come to think of it.

با اينکه ايران در سراسر تاريخ خود زيستگاه اقوام مختلف بوده اما کودکان آن در سده اخير همواره به زبان فارسی در مدارس تحصيل کرده اند.
زبان های ترکی و کردی تنها در دوره ای يک ساله در سالهاي۴۶- ۱۹۴۵ ميلادی در مدارس تحت اداره دولت های خودمختار فرقه دموکرات در آذربايجان و قاضی محمد در مهاباد تدريس شده است.
به اعتقاد برخی از تحليلگران، حکومت ايران چه پيش و چه پس از انقلاب اسلامی از آن بيم داشته که تحصيل قوميت ها به زبان های قومی خود آغازی برای تنش های قومی و جدايی طلبی در ايران باشد.
طی چند سال اخير که ايران صحنه نا آرامی های قومی در آذربايجان، کردستان، بلوچستان و خوزستان بوده، اين موضوع به دامنه نگرانی های دولت نسبت به تحرکات قومی و افزايش وابستگی های محلی آنها افزوده است
