Palestinians make UN statehood bid

"Enough, enough, enough," says Mahmoud Abbas

BBC: Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has submitted his bid to the UN for recognition of a Palestinian state. To rapturous applause in the General Assembly, he urged the Security Council to back a state with pre-1967 borders. He said the Palestinians had entered negotiations with Israel with sincere intentions, but blamed the building of Jewish settlements for their failure. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said he was reaching out to Palestinians and blamed them for refusing to negotiate. "I continue to hope that President Abbas will be my partner in peace," he said in his speech in New York >>>

I hope the Palestinians fo get a state within the pre-1967 borders and I actually believe the entire country will become a binational state. Israel and Palestine are inseperable.

However, as to this issue becoming a "regional issue like no other"; it is so because the IR has made it so. There are many other Muslim countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia which support the Palestinians aspirations for self-determination but somehow the issue does not become an existential crisis with the threat of nuclear war in its midsts.

Hate Israel if you like but if you are going to pick a fight with a country for ideological and human rights purposes look no further at Russia which has stolen our territory, created two short lived break away republics, invaded MUSLIM Afghanistan and destroyed MSULIM Chechnya and Georgia which were formerly Iranian territory. Hate Israel but hate Russia for supporting their Slav brothers in the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Bosnia.

Hate Israel but petition your local IR consulate to stop Bashir's genocide of MUSLIM Africans in Sudan.

Iran and Israel had cordial relations during the time of the great Shah which proves categorically that there doesn't have to be a 'regional crisis' unless you are looking for one. The Shah and Israel were far from best friends but there was at least an 'amicable truce'

I congratulate the Palestinians but the link between Iran and the Jewish people is inseverable.

Those on IC with "Palestine fatigue" syndrome make a note!

Urgency and sensitivity to the issue of Palestinian rights is NOT limited to Iranain "hypocrates" as you wish to call us! The whole world has become sick and tired of this injustice that has gone for too long.

True, there are other sufferings going on in the world that has to stop but this is a regional issue and like no other. If you don't like Turkish president advocacy and calling him also hypocrite, consider Brazilian president if you wish.

In her commencement speech two days ago she said she is sorry that she can not welcome Palestine as a UN member.

So unless you are one of those disguised israelis on this site or a Jewish Iranian with split heart between Iran and Israel, educate yourself and act like a decent human being who cares about human values of justice, fairness and truth!

A watershed moment!

Excellent move by PA. This, not only is an antithesis to the Israeli propaganda (as per today's speech by Netanyahu) that tries to link the Palestinian cause to Islamic fundamentalism, but it reveals the true face of U.S. as no more the "honest broker" it has been claiming to be so far, hence bring the issue to the attention of the international community! This was a non-militant, peaceful move by the Palestinians to dig themselves out of the abyss the Israelis and their American benefactors have entrapped them in!

Indeed, this might as well be pretty well the last chance for a two-state solution (considering the nonstop, fast pace of sttlement building by Israel through occupied Palestinian lands). For if Mahmmod Abbas fails, Hamas will be emboldened and take the upper hand, and even if Hamas is defeated, by the next generation or two, Palestinians would reshape the ethnic make-up of a one state, future apartheid system!

This is a great move. What

by vildemose on

This is a great move. What took him so long?

If 9 of 15 current UNSC members vote for the measure, Abbas can take it to the General Assembly, where he may well have the votes to succeed. In the end, the US will veto the move. But the Palestinians will have won a great symbolic victory.

Reform requires the consent of the corrupt
