Beside Russian made cars, now one can see other cars made by many different countries. This one is a Samand, made in Iran.
The most fun part of the city, beside its beautiful historical section, is the Sahel (beachfront) promenade. It is about five kilometers long and lies next to the beloved Caspian Sea.
But they were great at building vast public spaces, such as promenades, boulevards, and avenues. It corresponded to their ideology, emphasizing the common, and communal as against the private and individual. Here a major avenue in downtown Baku
A Soviet era building, the Heydar Aliev Foundation. Aliev was the communist party boss who led Azarbaijan SSR to independence in 1991. His son, Ilham, is now the president and his wife, Mehraban, runs the foundation.
The Soviets where not very good at building quality housing for their citizens anywhere in the old USSR, Baku included.
