News of playwright Harold Pinter’s death arrived in primetime, Christmas – a religious date, in Britain, for watching telly. You couldn’t escape the news and the news couldn’t escape reporting on Pinter’s final years and his opposition to the war in Iraq, as well as his monumental literary achievements. His stance on the war demanded to be featured in the briefest of TV obituaries. Of course, in the BBC News bulletin I caught, there was no mention of the fact that, in accepting his Nobel prize for literature in 2005, he had called for Tony Blair to be prosecuted for war crimes. That would have been too much given the mince pies, turkey, pigs in blanket and booze viewers will have been digesting>>>

In Praise of Silence

There is a long standing tradition of voluntary silence in religious orders the world over. Silence is golden, so goes the saying; it teaches self-discipline and forces the individual to think and reflect. It’s believed that silence stimulates other senses that are often dulled by the ego’s eagerness to shoot its mouth so to speak. There are orders of trappist monks who spend their days singing hymns and reciting prayers and refrain from casual conversation except when given permission by their superiors. There are orders of nuns who having taken a vow of silence communicate mostly in a special sign language. By eliminating the unnecessary, they seek the essential. By looking past the clutter, they search for the “kernel of truth.” >>>

مذهب و تروریسم

این نوشتار چکیده ای از دو مقاله است که در مجامع تخصصی مطرح و منتشر کرده ام. سبب نشر این خلاصه در این صفحات تفکیک مقولاتی چون مبارزات آزادیبخش، جنگهای نا منظم و، عملیات انتحاری از تروریسم است. چرا که در غیاب چنین تحلیلی هرگونه قضاوتی فاقد دقت علمی و بنیش سیاسی خواهد بود. البته منشاَ خطایا در این مورد تنها جهل و تعصب نیست بلکه انگیزه های سیاسی نیز در آن سهیمند. مثلا در غرب تلفیق دلبخواهانه مقولات فوق به دلایل تبلیغاتی و برای ملوّث کردن مبارزات مشروع ملل مظلوم انجام می گیرد. در ایران هم متاسفانه گروههائی به سبب عدم اطلاع از ظرائف تعریف و تحقیق ندانسته به دفاع از مجموعه ای می پردازند که در غرب بسته بندی شده و به این ترتیب آتش اتهام و سو ظن را بر علیه ایران را دامن می زنند. البته معدودی هم هستند که براستی تصور می کنند که می توان از اعمال تروریستی به صورت انتخابی و بر حسب حب و بغض سیاسی حمایت کرد. این شگرد یک بام و دو هوا نه بلحاظ اخلاقی جایز است و نه از نظر سیاسی ممکن. .>>>

My life is changing, and so am I

I have connected with a lot of people in need of a friend as well as a physician. I have experienced moments that I knew right then would leave a lasting impact on my life, and am pretty sure that I know how to manage atrial fibrillation under a couple of different circumstances. And I do think that generally, most people like it that there’s this guy who comes into their room, asks them how their night was, and listens to them before launching into an examination of every surface and crevice that they normally keep hidden from the world. Probably one of the most valuable and difficult aspects of my education has been the daily realities that I encounter on the job, the struggles of all types of individuals>>>

اسلحه ای قویتر از خنجر

خانم مهین اشتری در همان دقایق اول با ایفای نقش قوی خود مرا مجذوب موضوع داستان کرد و چیزی نگذشت که فهمیدم آقای کاظم اشتری کیست. از این گونه کاظم ها ما در جامه بسیار داریم و در زندگی روزمره با آنها برخورد داشته ایم. ولی آنچه نظیرش کمتر هست خود خانم اشتری است. او با یک تفکر واقع گرایانه و با استفاده از رنج های پنهانی سالهای سپری شده اش تصمیم گرفته بجای کینه و بجای دشمنی با معشوقه ی سابق همسرش ، که او نیز قربانی آقای اشتری بوده ، یک همکاری دوستانه و منصفانه را آغاز کند که بنفع خودش ، دخترش و معشوقه ی سابق همسرش باشد. تمام زیبایی و نکته نمایشنامه در همین تصمیم خلاصه می شود که بسیار انسانی، فمینیستی و خرد گرایانه است و اسلحه ایست قویتر از خنجر!>>>
