سرو نمادی از هویت ملی ایرانیان است. در تاریخ بیهقی از کاشتن دو سروی که به وسیله اشو زرتشت نشانده شده بود سخن رفته است: سرو فریومد در توس و سرو کاشمر. سرو کاشمر به دستور خلیفه ای از ریشه کنده شد و سرو فریومد نیز بعدها به دست سلطان متجاوزی سوزانده شد.
