English translation of a patriotic song performed by Kurdish group, "Zhovan"

This is translation of a patriotic song performed by Iranian group "Zhovan" who are Kurds. This group was formed in 2004 and its members are a family who live together and are skilled musical performers.

I saw the video of this group performing this song and instantly loved it.  However,  I am finding conflicting information about who wrote the song.  Video notes that "Mojtaba Kashani" is "sarayandeh" but some websites write that "Farrokhi Yazdi" was the poet.  In any case, here is the Farsi to English translation:

Rise up , Enemy has come to our land today

You, the lion-hearted, it is time to hunt today

Rise up so we can ask the disturbed enemy

For what has he come to land of braves today?

For what has he come to land of braves today?

This hostile-talking enemy does not know our thinking

Sun is covered all with dust today

This traveler with wind is not aware of inner secrets

Autumn has come to battle spring today

We are lover, Drunken, apostle and warrior

He has come not knowing the world of friend today

Drunken with lover’s face, will not be afraid of stranger

This flame has come to kill the night today

We are lover, Drunken, apostle and warrior

He has come not knowing the world of friend today

Drunken with lover’s face, will not be afraid of stranger

This flame has come to kill the night today

Dear Anonymouse, help with translations whenever you can

by Anahid Hojjati on

Your help at that time was very much appreciated since that poem was even more difficult than this one to translate. I undertsand that you are just not that much into poetry but then whenever you can, you are welcome to improve my poems/translations/etc.

Anahid jaan you did a good job. I'm not an expert, just translate some things sometimes as they come up.  That poem was very nice and I'm glad I was a part of it. As I've always said I'm not too much into poetry but in this website in the past couple of years, I've come to understad and relate to some of the poems by you and other contributors like Orang or PW.  I'm more into novels (and movies) than poetry.

Everything is sacred.

Dear mg, I love that line too:

مستِ رُخِ جانانه ز بیگانه نترسد

Thanks for reading my translation and for your words of encouragement.

باشد که مستی  را دو بأره بیاموزیم و رسم عشق ورزی را که
رسم کهن مردان و کهن زنان آن سرزمین بوده است به باوری دو باره
بنشینیم.باشد که چراغ جان بر افروزیم و غبار از آیینه دل بروبیم و خرد را
به مشقی نو بنشینیم. باشد که

دلاوری و مهیار ی را از فرهنگ غنی‌ و اصیل
خود بیاموزیم و عشق را سر فراز سازیم.

Dear Mehrban, translation will get easier with more practice

by Anahid Hojjati on

I don't have much experience translating but practice makes perfect.  Altready I am learning little pointers such as the fact that in poetry autumn sounds better than fall.  Or, it is better suited to use rise up.  Note my other comment about the suggestions that I received after my posting.

I improved the translation using one writer's suggestions

by Anahid Hojjati on

After posting my blog, one of you dear writers of the site had some suggestions to improve the translation which I incorportaed most of his suggestions.  Thanks to him and if he approves, I will let you know who made the suggestions.  For now, enjoy it and JJ, this should be featured.  At least, I think so.

I agree, it is very difficult to translate from Farsi to English.  I am stumped at the very first verse.  That's why my hat is off to you for having completed the translation.

Thanks Mehrban for your comment, all are invited to improve this

by Anahid Hojjati on

Thanks Mehrban for reading and commenting.  It turns out that for me, it is more difficult to translate From Farsi to English than vice versa.  All writers are invited to improve my translation.  If some choose to improve the whole translation, I will pick one that I like the best and with permission of translator, I will feature that one along with my original one.  The translator will also get his/her name (even the fake name) listed.  I believe the Farsi poem is very beautiful and it deserves to have the best translation to English.  Anonymouse, are you there?  Last time, you helped out with translation to English of poem "Remember the candle that has died, Remember", note the following link

So dear mouse, are you up to helping out with this one?

Farsi text of original song which I translated to English

by Anahid Hojjati on
